FEATURED PICTURE · The Cedar River bridge at Rochester was closed to traffic last Tuesday, April 29. County officials said the bridge will have to be inspected to determine if flood waters caused any damage to the piers that support the structure.

Cedar County Engineer Rob Fangmann reported to supervisors last week that road conditions change daily depending on whether there are significant local rains or rains north of the county that affect the local streams.

Claiming conduct that was “dishonest and deceitful,” the Cedar County Fair Board and the Cedar County Fair Association have filed an answer and counterclaim to a lawsuit filed against the organizations by Mathews Community Center Inc., Bart Montgomery and William Penningroth of Tipton.

The Tipton FFA Chapter held their end of the year banquet on April 20 at the Tipton high school. New members were honored by receiving their Greenhand Degrees, Chapter Degrees and Iowa Degrees. Other members were recognized for Career Development Events and received Outstanding Member Awards. The top fruit sellers were recognized and the Honorary Member was also recognized.

Formerly known as the Swing of the Quad Cities, the River Bandits is a Class A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. County Must Accept Common Law Marriage

Human Resources Consultant Paul Greufe told Cedar county supervisors April 14 that the county has “no option but to accept common law marriage” when fully insured benefits are offered to employees. He said his research indicates that since the State of Iowa recognizes common law marriage between a male and female, the couple is entitled to all benefits the county offers to married employees, including family funeral leave and health insurance for the spouse.
