Funeral services for Vingene “Bud” Martens, 79, Rock Falls, Ill., were held Monday, Feb. 15, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church in Sterling, Ill., with Rev. Christina Berry officiating. Burial was in the Davenport Memorial park cemetery.
Mr. Martens died Feb. 9 at his home.
The son of Billie and Ethel Peterson Martens, he was born Dec. 3, 1936 in Davenport. He graduated from St. Ambrose University in Davenport with a BA in accounting. He served with the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1958 in Japan and Korea. He married Wanda Cromer on Nov. 19, 1966 in Davenport.
Mr. Martens was the owner/operator of “The Bookstore” in Rock Falls for 24 years, retiring in 2007.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sterling and he had served as the assistant secretary/treasurer of the Sterling/Rock Falls Bowling Association board of directors. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Mr. Marten is survived by his wife; a daughter, Rachel (Neal) Pepin, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son, Brian (Martha) Martens, Sterling, Ill.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Sterling and Hospice of the Rock River Valley.
